I spent one afternoon backstage at the tents during this year’s Fashion Week. These photos are a mix from three shows: Jill Stuart, Mara Hoffman and Tibi.  I don’t pretend to know anything about fashion but I can appreciate all the work that goes into putting one of these shows on. Hair, makeup, nails, run throughs, clothes, interviews, etc.. all going on before the show happens. Maybe one day I’ll actually be in front of the show. Full gallery at end of post.

Last year while covering ATP NY I had the opportunity to shoot Iggy Pop in his hotel room.  Like most of my portraits I’m not sure if they will happen. If they do I have  only  a few minutes with my subject. Iggy had just headlined that evening and was resting before leaving for another gig.  Needless to say he had just given everything he had onstage so I wasn’t sure he would be up for it.  But the manager brought me in and said to make it quick. Apparently  Iggy doesn’t eat before a show so when I was brought in he was devouring a stack of ribs. He just said “Do your thing man, I’m going to eat this if thats cool.”  I thought it was perfect. Iggy had fun with it too. So after maybe 8-10 frames I said thanks, shook his hand and was out.  I included a gallery of the live show at the bottom of the post.

Here are a few shots from frontstage, sidestage and backstage at Lollapalooza 2011 in Chicago, IL.  My favorite set of the weekend was by far Crystal Castles. Alice Glass always gives you something fun to shoot. The rest of the fest was ok but nothing really stood out for me. That said I always love seeing Lykke Li , Ellie Goulding and The Black Lips. This year I tried to do more portraits.  I’m pretty happy with what I got considering I had nothing set up in advance.  Take a look. Full gallery at the end of the post.

I spent the day at a “secret” lake with some friends last week. Technically, it may have been a pond.  Either way it had been along time since I’d done anything like that. Probably since I lived in Texas. Additional photos taken by Julia Wertz.

Pitchfork 2011: 3 days of heat and music.  Besides the obvious center point of the fest, which was Odd Future,  my favorite performance was by Health. Full gallery at the end of the post.

This year at SXSW I concentrated on doing portraits.  I still shot a decent amount of live music but I didn’t want to run around all week. Maybe I’m getting old.  I stayed at Fader Fort by Fiat for most of time. They consistently put on a great show during SXSW. Full gallery is at the bottom of the post.

Last April I caught up with Semi Precious Weapons during the last leg of the Monster Ball Tour at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY. SPW had been the opening act for Lady Gaga’s Monster Ball Tour which had been going on for almost 2 years. I’ve shot SPW a number times now but never in an arena so I was excited to see the show.

Fifteen minutes before doors opened, I finally go the ok from security to set up and do portraits. I was only allowed to shoot away from the stage and when I was done had to put my camera away when I was backstage. After that, I was only allowed to shoot in SPW’s dressing room. Needless to say I moved fast.

Backstage wasn’t the crazy scene I expected. Though I did walk through a group of Gaga’s backup dancers wearing ass-less pants.  Lady Starlight was hanging out with Breedlove while icing her pulled groin before her DJ set.  Justin put on makeup.  The band passed around a bottle of Jack Daniels while one of Gaga’s backup dancers showed off her six pack and did handstand push ups. Then it was showtime.

Over the course of tour , SPW  must have expanded their fan base because everyone knew the words to their songs.  Justin, as usual, commanded the audience to “love him” all the while showing gratitude for their opportunity to be opening for the biggest music star on the planet. But most importantly, pumped up the crowd for Gaga.

No I didn’t shoot Gaga, I didn’t even see her. Apparently there is a lock down that happens when she arrives so we had to be on the floor before she came through. I was totally fine with that. I got great coverage of SPW rocking out an arena show.  And I got to be in the audience  for a Lady Gaga show. All in all, a good time.
